School Overview
The School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, founded in 1972, is among the earliest-established schools of the university. Both its Engineering and Materials Science disciplines rank among the top 1% in the ESI global rankings.
It boasts a comprehensive first-class talent cultivation system covering undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, with over 2,000 students currently enrolled.
The school offers 6 undergraduate programs, namely Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, and Robotics Engineering.
The Process Equipment and Control Engineering program was approved as a National Distinctive Major in 2009, selected into the first batch of National First-Class Undergraduate Programs in 2019, and passed the Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2022. It was rated as a Five-Star China First-Class Major (top 5 nationwide) in the 2020 China Mechanical First-Class Major Rankings by the Aier Shen Alumni Association. Its Party branch was selected as a National Model Party Branch for Party Building Work in 2019.
School-running History
Founded in 1972, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is one of the earliest-established schools of the university. It has developed into a college with complete mechanical-related programs and strong strength in teaching and scientific research. Currently, it undertakes the teaching tasks for undergraduates and the cultivation of master's and doctoral students. It consists of 4 departments (Power Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering) and 1 Experimental Teaching and College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center. The college has 6 undergraduate programs with a total of 2,153 students, including 435 postgraduates and 1,718 undergraduates.
Faculty Strength
The school has 112 registered faculty and staff members, including 96 full-time teachers, 21 professors, 34 associate professors, 74 teachers with doctoral degrees, and 19 teachers with master's degrees. There are 11 doctoral supervisors and 66 master's supervisors. Among the faculty, there is 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 Changjiang Scholars of the Ministry of Education, 1 national candidate for the Ten Thousand Talents Program, 1 National Excellent Young Scholar, 1 Young Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, and more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level talents such as Chutian Scholars and Chutian Talents.
Discipline Characteristics
The school has a doctoral program in the first-level discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, two master's programs in first-level disciplines (Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, and Mechanical Engineering) covering 9 master's programs in second-level disciplines, as well as two professional master's programs (Energy and Power, and Mechanical Engineering). Among them, the first-level discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics has formed disciplinary advantages with the research and development of chemical machinery as its main characteristic. Its school-running history, scale, and disciplinary level have important influence in Hubei Province and the Central South Region. It was rated as a Key Cultivated Discipline of Hubei Province in 2010 (Document No. E Degree [2010] No. 1) and a Provincial Distinctive Discipline in 2012 (Document No. E Teaching and Research [2012] No. 3). The second-level disciplines of Chemical Process Machinery and Mechatronic Engineering are both disciplines with positions under the Hubei Provincial "Chutian Scholars Program".
Scientific Achievements
The school has scientific research platforms such as an Academician Workstation, Hubei Key Laboratory of Chemical Equipment Enhancement and Intrinsic Safety, Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center of Green Chemical Equipment, and Hubei Research Center of Intelligent Welding Equipment and Software Engineering Technology. It holds the qualification for the standardized design of stationary pressure vessels issued by the Hubei Provincial Market Supervision and Administration Bureau. From 2014 to 2023, the college undertook more than 20 national-level projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with vertical funding of nearly 30 million yuan and a total scientific research income of over 80 million yuan. More than 800 academic papers have been published, among which more than 500 have been indexed by SCI, EI, and ISTP. Over 110 invention patents have been authorized, and more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research awards have been obtained, including 2 first prizes and 6 second prizes of Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
Talent Cultivation
In accordance with the requirement of "cultivating elite students", the school has carried out effective talent cultivation work, highlighting the core position of study style construction in students' daily education and management. The college has 6 undergraduate programs, namely Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, and Robotics Engineering. Among them, the Process Equipment and Control Engineering program is a National Distinctive Major and one of the first batch of approved undergraduate brand programs in Hubei Province. It was selected into the first batch of National First-Class Undergraduate Programs in 2019 and passed the Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2022. It was rated as a Five-Star China First-Class Major (top 5 nationwide) in the 2020 China Mechanical First-Class Major Rankings by the Aier Shen Alumni Association. The Chemical Machinery Party Branch where the program is located was selected as a National Model Party Branch for Party Building Work in 2019.
Postgraduate Entrance Examination and Employment
The school attaches great importance to college students' employment. It carries out a series of activities every year, such as employment guidance, postgraduate entrance examination mobilization, policy promotion, and experience exchange. The students cultivated by the college have high comprehensive quality, solid professional knowledge, and strong engineering practice ability, which are deeply welcomed by employers. The employment rate has been stably above 98%, among which the employment rate in high-end and high-paying positions has reached more than 35%. A large number of graduates are employed by Fortune Global 500 and Top 100 Chinese enterprises such as Sinopec, China Railway, China State Construction, CRRC, and China Gezhouba Group every year. More than 30% of the college's undergraduate graduates are admitted to postgraduate programs at home and abroad, among which the postgraduate entrance examination rate of students in the innovation class reaches 60%, and more than 75% are admitted to key universities under the 985, 211, and "Double First-Class" initiatives, such as Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Sichuan University. At present, a large number of the college's graduates hold important positions in administrative organs, enterprises, and institutions, making outstanding contributions to social development.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The school attaches great importance to the development of students' extracurricular scientific and technological activities and the cultivation of their innovation and entrepreneurship abilities. Students have achieved excellent results in various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. In the past five years, students of the college have won more than 500 awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including 2 national first prizes in the "Challenge Cup" Competition, a national gold medal in the "Internet Plus" Competition (a historic breakthrough for the university), a national first prize in the "Mechanical Innovation Design Competition", a first prize in the China-US Maker Competition, a national silver medal in the "Create Youth" College Students' Entrepreneurship Competition, a national special prize in the "College Students' Process Equipment Practice and Innovation Competition", a "Constant Star Level" national first prize in the "Black Technology" Special Competition of the Challenge Cup National Competition, and a national first prize in the Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Competition. A number of typical innovative and entrepreneurial students have emerged in the college, such as Lu Fangqi, Zhang Cong, and Zhang Jingyu. In the past 6 years, a total of 5 students have been awarded the Hubei Provincial "Yangtze River Scholars" Entrepreneurship Award (only 30 are awarded in the province every year), making it the college that has cultivated the most "Yangtze River Scholars" so far. In December 2020, the college successfully hosted the launching ceremony of the RoboMaster 2021 University Alliance Competition Central China Station. In April 2021, it successfully held the 20th National University Students' Robot Competition RoboMaster 2021 Mecha Master University Alliance Competition. In June 2023, the college's "Nautilus" teacher-student team won the championship in the RoboMaster 2023 Mecha Master University Alliance Competition, achieving the best historical result.
International Exchange
The school adheres to open education and strengthens international exchanges and cooperation. It has carried out extensive exchanges and cooperation in talent cultivation and scientific research with universities and companies in many countries and regions, such as France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Korea. A number of well-known domestic and foreign experts and scholars, such as Professor Tan Jianrong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering from Zhejiang University, have been invited to give lectures in the college. Every year, more than 10 teachers pursue postdoctoral studies, conduct academic visits, and carry out scientific research project cooperation abroad.
The college has established stable cooperative school-running relationships with foreign universities such as the University of Louisiana in the United States and the École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Metz in France, as well as domestic universities such as Nanjing Tech University, Hebei University of Science and Technology, and Qingdao University of Science and Technology. It has successively accepted 17 French students from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Metz to complete a six-month internship, sent 4 master's students to the École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Metz for short-term study, sent a number of undergraduates to the University of Louisiana to pursue master's degrees, and carried out exchange programs with Nanjing Tech University, Hebei University of Science and Technology, and Qingdao University of Science and Technology.
